Prada Cup Challenger Series – Day three delivers action

Wow. The story of the day is the dramatic capsize of American Magic. Most fortunately, nobody was hurt and it looks like they’ve been able to keep the boat afloat. A big shout out to the efforts of the other teams in helping them, as in the words of our on the spot commentator Bex Morgan, “they all look like one team out there.” The link to our live feed for this can be found here. Our team photographer Georgia Schofield also captured some images. A wrap up video with Chris Steele and Bradley McLaughlin will be out soon too.

What drama. We were eagerly anticipating how the AC75s would go in heavier breeze and a much tougher sea state. While the first race of the day was abandoned, it looked like Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli had boat speed on Ineos Team UK, although admittedly it is easier to do that while in the lead.

Unlike their previous three victories, the Brits made a mistake in the pre start and handed Luna Rossa the advantage. From there the Italians sailed well and extended their lead significantly, looking like they were going to put a point on the board and hand the Brits their first loss. But, as all sailors know, the breeze can be fickle. In this case we saw a massive 90 degree wind shift, which saw the Brits chop down the gap and take the lead at the bottom gate of leg 4. However, Iain Murray then made the call to abandon the race, and we were back to square one.

The below image from the PredictWind App shows just how big the breeze shift was. If you haven’t got the App and a subscription yet then you’re missing out! Prada Cup Challenger Series – Day three delivers action
